FAQ

Where are you located?
I live in California though work remotely with clients throughout the states of California, Mississippi and Florida using teletherapy.

You’ll just need a cell phone, computer, or tablet, along with a secure Internet connection, and you’ll get right to my virtual waiting room. Please click here for additional information about online therapy.

Do you accept insurance?
No. I am an out-of-network provider, which means you will pay at the time of the session. I can provide you with a Superbill (fancy word for a receipt with all the necessary codes your insurance company will need when requesting reimbursement). PPO insurance plans typically reimburse 50-80% of session costs.

If you are interested in reimbursement, I suggest you call your insurance company first to determine whether out-of-network therapy sessions are reimbursed. Here are some questions to ask when you call:

  • Do I have out-of-network benefits for outpatient mental health services delivered through telehealth?
  • What percentage of my bill will be reimbursed for services from an out-of-network provider?
  • What is my deductible and has it been met?
  • How do I get reimbursed?
Why aren’t you in-network with my insurance?

There are several reasons I prefer not to work with insurance.

Insurance companies require a diagnosis, which then becomes a “pre-existing condition” that can stay with you for life. This can be problematic when applying for life insurance or future employment.

Also, insurance companies have access to your confidential records. They dictate how many sessions you can have, how many minutes per session, and whether it’s medically necessary. Some even dictate exactly how a provider should treat you.

I strive to provide you with a confidential experience that’s completely tailored to your needs (and not dictated by the tight restraints of in-network managed care).

By paying out of pocket, you’re in control of your experience and whether your information is released to your insurance. I am happy to discuss your specific situation during your initial consultation.

Can you provide an estimate of my total costs?
If you are paying privately or using “Out of Network” benefits for your therapy, I will provide you with a “Good Faith Estimate” explaining how much your care will cost. Under the federal “No Surprises Act,” health care providers must give patients who do not have insurance or who are not using insurance an estimate of the bill for medical items and services. You have the right to receive a Good Faith Estimate for the total expected cost of any non-emergency services and you will be provided with a Good Faith Estimate in writing at least one business day before your first appointment. If you receive a bill that is at least $400 more than your Good Faith Estimate, you can dispute the bill. Make sure to save a copy or picture of your Good Faith Estimate.
What are your hours?

My office hours are generally Monday through Friday, 8:00 AM – 5:00 PM PT.

How do I set up an appointment?
Simply give me a call or send me an email, and I’ll get back to you about scheduling a free 20-minute consultation. During the consultation, you can tell me a little bit about your challenges and what’s important to you and ask me any questions you may have. From there, we’ll decide if I’m the right fit for you. If so, we’ll schedule your first appointment and get started.
What’s your cancellation policy?

I am dedicated to helping you make meaningful and lasting changes in your life. To do this, I set aside time especially for you.

If you cannot attend your scheduled appointment for any reason, you must give me at least 48 hours notice so that you are not billed.

Can I pay with my HSA or FSA card?
Yes. In addition to Visa, MasterCard, American Express, Discover, JCB, and UnionPay cards, you can also use a Health Savings Account (HSA) or Flexible Spending Account (FSA) card.
How often will I have sessions?

This depends on your individual needs and goals.

Most clients choose to have weekly sessions at the beginning of therapy and then move to biweekly appointments. Because my schedule fills up quickly, I recommend finding a regular weekly appointment time that works for you.

How long is each therapy session?

Sessions are approximately 50 minutes in length.

With whom do you work?
I specialize in working with adult women of all ages and seasons of life who are ready to look within, invest in their personal growth, and feel motivated for change. They’re tired of feeling stuck, unfulfilled, anxious, hurt, and guilty. They’re ready to slow down and discover themselves. If this is you, it would be my honor to walk with you on this journey and shine a light for you to see yourself more clearly.
With whom do you NOT work?

I don’t see anyone under 18 or new clients with active suicidal ideation.

I don’t see anyone who is in an active state of substance dependence.

I do see people with a history of addiction for which they have already received treatment.

Do you work with people from culturally diverse backgrounds, ethnicities, sexual orientations, and religions?

Absolutely. I have been trained in multicultural competency and highly value inclusivity. While my practice specializes in those who have been raised and socialized as women, it is understood that each woman’s cultural experience, values, and beliefs will be different from one another, and all are welcome and accepted here.

California and Mississippi are two very different states. How did that happen?
I’m an island girl with a sense of adventure. I was raised in Hawaii and then lived in Nevada, California, and Arizona… and then back to California again (with short stints in other states and countries, too).

I’ve moved a lot in my life, but moving is hard, and it eventually took a toll on me. I found my permanent home by the ocean in California and was determined never to leave. It’s funny how plans change.

I met the love of my life, who was in the Navy at the time. Just before we were married, he was transferred to Gulfport, Mississippi. So, I packed up my belongings once again. It turns out that I loved the southern charm of Mississippi. As they say, “the place where tea is sweet (and accents are sweeter); fried pickles and okra are the only vegetables; front porches come with a swing; “y’all, ma’am, and sir” are still used as terms of address; and someone’s heart is always being blessed.”

We lived in Mississippi for almost five years, and I began my private practice there, so it will always hold a special place in my heart. I’m honored to continue providing therapy for the people there, as well as my clients in California and Florida.

Is that a dog I hear in the background?
I rescued my 10-year-old yellow lab, “Maggie Mae,” while living in Mississippi. She truly is my sweet southern belle and loves to “go to work” with me (i.e., she sleeps soundly at my feet).

There is absolutely nothing dainty about the way she drinks water, though. About once a day, she decides to lap up the entire bowl. Even though it’s about 20 feet from my desk, clients hear it and ask, “Is that your dog drinking water?” Yes. Yes, it is (sigh).
